There is no limit on the size of the family under this scheme. The scheme was earlier known as National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) before it was renamed PM-JAY. This scheme was launched by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 23rd September 2018.

PM-JAY has been launched for the bottom 40% poor and vulnerable population. The families included are based on the socio-economic caste census 2011 (SECC 2011) deprivation and occupational criteria for rural and urban areas respectively. This scheme was subsumed into the then existing Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) launched in 2008. Hence, the coverage mentioned under PM-JAY also includes such families which were included in RSBY but were not present in SECC 2011 database.
