The house is different each time you build it. At some random point during the game, one explorer triggers a scenario called a haunt. When the haunt is revealed, one explorer becomes a traitor bent on defeating his or her former companions. The rest of the explorers become heroes struggling to survive.

From then on, the game is a fight between the traitor and the heroes—often to the death. This game has fifty haunts, and each one tells a different story. All are yours to explore as you live or die in the House on the Hill.

Gameplay rules

Betrayal at House on the Hill is split into two separate stages: the exploration phase, where all players are on the same team, and the haunt phase, where players are sometimes split into different teams depending on the haunt.

A set of various requirements decides which of the numbered haunt scenarios you’ll experience during a playthrough. However, until the haunt happens, you’ll all be walking around the mansion experiencing various spooky goings-on and gathering – sometimes – useful items.

Betrayal at House on the Hill Rules PDF – Setting up the Game

  1. Each player chooses one of the six explorer/character cards. The character cards are double-sided, so each player needs to choose which version of that character they will be using. The character’s name and their physical and mental traits vary per side.
  2. Attach four of the plastic clips on each side of the character card that displays a trait. The clip’s point should be aimed at the green starting number for that selected character. (Physical Traits: Speed and Might / Mental Traits: Sanity and Knowledge)
  3. Separate and shuffle the Omen, Event, and Item cards into their own individual piles. Place them face down on the table within reach of all players.
  4. Place all of the dice on the table within reach. They will be used frequently by all players.
  5. Look for the large rectangular floor tile labeled “Entrance Hall/Foyer/Grand Staircase” and two regular square floor tiles labeled “Basement Landing” and “Upper Landing”.

Place the large tile in the middle of the play area with the landing tiles distanced further apart on the table.

  1. Lastly, everyone places their character’s plastic miniature in the Entrance Hall. The player who controls the character with the nearest upcoming birthday (listed on their character card) will take the first turn!
