Many emotions vie for dominance among the young men living in limbo in “Kill Move Paradise,” the bleak and beautiful new drama by James Ijames at the National Black Theater in Harlem. Fear, rage, disgust, helplessness, a sardonic amusement, and sorrow beyond tears — these responses ebb and flow in a seemingly unending cycle during the show’s time-bending 80 minutes.

But the feeling that overwhelms all others is an unfathomable incredulity. How, but how, could these men possibly have ended up where they are? The specific moments that propelled them here are at first hazy, if not blank, in their memories. But even when recollection returns, the astonished bewilderment remains.

I’m not giving away much when I say that the four characters in Mr. Ijames’s tone poem of a play are dead. That much you surmise more or less from the beginning. It’s the way in which they died that leaves them in such a state of angry perplexity — that and their awareness that their numbers are legion, and increasing by the day.

These young men are called Isa (Ryan Swain), Grif (Donnell E. Smith), Daz (Clinton Lowe), and Tiny (Sidiki Fofana), and they are part of a list that includes names from recent headlines such as Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and Michael Brown. Isa, the first of the characters we meet, finds himself in physical possession of such a list, and it appears to have grown in size every time he consults it.

Isa, Grif, Daz and Tiny have two things in common: They are African-American and they were wrenched out of their young lives before they even knew what was happening. Tiny, the youngest of the four and the last to join their ranks, describes a boy playing with a toy gun in a park. NOTE: – You can read the complete Drama in the Given PDF
