John Henry Holiday (August 14, 1851 – November 8, 1887), known as Doc Holiday, was an American gambler, gunsmith, and dentist. A close friend and collaborator of lawman Wyatt Earp, Holiday was known as the O.K. Coral. He developed a reputation for killing more than ten men in various skirmishes, but modern researchers have concluded that, contrary to popular myth, Holliday killed only one to three men.

At age 21, Holiday graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery with a degree in dentistry. He began training in Griffin, Georgia but was soon diagnosed with tuberculosis, the same disease his mother had contracted at the age of 15 while attending to her needs during the infectious phase of the disease. Believing that the climate of the American Southwest would ease his symptoms, he moved to the region and became a gambler, a prestigious profession in Arizona at his time. Over the next few years, he reportedly faced several conflicts. While in Texas, he rescued Wyatt Earp, a well-known lawyer, and gambler.

Later they became friends. In 1879, he joined attractions in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and later traveled with them to Prescott, Arizona, and then to Tombstone. In Tombstone, local members of the illegal Cochise County Cowboys repeatedly bullied him and spread rumors that he had robbed a stagecoach. The holiday was ordained by Tombstone City Marshal Virgil Earp on October 26, 1881. Lawmakers attempted to disarm five members of the Cowboys near OK. Corral on the west side of the city, resulting in a famous shootout.
