The Crucible

Dear reader, if you are searching for The Crucible PDF and you are unable to find it anywhere then don’t worry you are on the right page. Crucible is a 1953 play by American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a dramatic and partly fictionalized account of the Salem Witch Trials in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692–93. Miller wrote the play as an allegory of McCarthyism when the US government persecuted accused communists. Miller was investigated by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956 and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to identify others who had attended those meetings.

The play was first performed at the Martin Beck Theater on Broadway on January 22, 1953, with E.G. Starring Marshall, Beatrice Strait, and Madeleine Sherwood. Miller felt the production was too stylized and cold, and reviews for it were mostly unfavorable (although The New York Times called it “a powerful theatrical performance”). The production won the Tony Award for Best Drama in 1953. A year later, a new production hit, and the play became a classic. It is considered a central work in the theory of American drama.

The Crucible PDF – Historical accuracy

In 1953, when the play debuted, Miller wrote, “The Crucible is drawn from history. There is no character in the play who does not take a similar role as in Salem, 1692.” It doesn’t seem accurate because Miller made both deliberate alterations and accidental mistakes. Abigail Williams’ age was raised from 11 or 12 to 17, which may add credibility to the backdrop of Proctor’s affair with Abigail. John Proctor was 60 years old in 1692, but for this reason, he is depicted as very young in the play.

“Although there were several judges of almost equal authority, I have identified them all with Hawthorne and Danforth,” Miller said in a note on the play’s historical accuracy. However, it also links Danforth to the historical and highly influential figure of William Stoughton, who is not a character and is only briefly mentioned in the play. Both were consecutive lieutenant governors, but after the jury initially acquitted Rebecca Nurse, Stoughton (one of the jury members, an unmarried bachelor) ordered further deliberations. He refuses to accept that the trials were anything but successful, and when Governor Phipps (whose own wife is named as a possible witch anyway) ends the trial for good and releases the prisoners. Gave.

Danford did not sit at the court of Oyer and Terminer. In fact, he is on record as criticizing the conduct of the investigation and playing a role in ending them. In the play, Thomas, and especially Ann Putnam, learn that only one of their children survives to adulthood. In real life, ten of his twelve children survived Putnam (both died in 1699), including Ann Jr. Thomas Putnam’s behavior during the witch trial frenzy, which was almost entirely due to financial motivations and scores. is documented. After settling, the play only mentions Poonam’s imaginary dead descendants as part of the plot.

In his 1953 essay “Journey to the Crucible,” Miller wrote about visiting Salem and being only interested in what actually happened in 1692. Many of Miller’s characters are based on people who don’t have much on the public record, except for their own statements. from the trials, but others survived to elaborate, refute or comment on the role that Salem played, including the jury, accusers, survivors, and judges. On 26 November 1694, the Rev. Paris issued its first apology and was deposed in 1697. In 1698, Hale completed a lengthy treatise on Salem, which George Burr reprinted in 1914.
