1. Choose a Resume Format

There are three standard resume formats: chronological, functional, and hybrid (sometimes called a combination resume). For most job seekers, a hybrid resume format, which places equal emphasis on skills and work experience, is the best option. However, in some cases, a chronological or functional resume may work better.

2. Add your name and contact information

The top of your resume should include the following information:

  • Name
  • phone number
  • Location (City, State, Pin Code)
  • Email address
  • Linkedin profile URL
  • It may sound obvious, but job seekers sometimes forget an important piece of contact information in this section.
  • Double-check and make it as easy as possible for recruiters to contact you for job interviews.

Contact Information Resume Tips:

  • Include a personal phone number, never a work number.
  • You don’t need to include your full address, but be sure to add your city, state, and zip code. Recruiters often look for local candidates first.
  • Use a professional-sounding email address. If you currently use an older email service like Hotmail or AOL, consider creating a free Gmail account for your job search.
  • Build a strong LinkedIn profile and be sure to include the URL on your resume.

3. Write An Exceptional Resume Headline

A resume title is a short, one-line description of who you are as a candidate. A well-written headline can grab a recruiter’s attention and encourage them to take a more detailed look at your qualifications.

Your title is a small but powerful addition to your resume, often the initial thing a recruiter read. Take improvement of the chance to make a sturdy first impression. This is an additional chance to include a detailed job title or keyword that can be used to sort your recommence at ATS.

4. Detail Your Work Experience

The work experience section is the heart of your resume. Employers look at this section closely to determine whether your job history and prior achievements make you a promising candidate.

It is therefore important to detail not only your job responsibilities but also your potential in prior roles. The work experience section is your chance to show employers and hiring managers how you’ve added unique value to other companies.

The first things a recruiter looks for on your resume are the job titles you hold and the caliber of companies you’ve worked with. Make this information easy to find by sticking to a familiar format.

List each task in reverse-chronological order. Each work should have its own subheading that includes the following information:

  • company
  • job location
  • your job title
  • start and end dates

5. Add Your Education, Certifications, And Any Other Relevant Information

Other resume sections may be worth adding, depending on both the job and your unique experience. These classes include things like education, awards and accolades, volunteer experience, and certification. Keep in mind that your resume should always showcase your skills for that particular job, so anything in your history that doesn’t support your image of being an ideal candidate for the role doesn’t need to be included.

Education

It’s common to include your education on your resume, especially if you’re applying for a job that requires a degree. If you are a few years into your career, the education section of your resume can be shortened to the bottom of your resume. Unless you are applying to a career that places additional emphasis on education (such as education, law, or medicine), most job seekers can only provide the following information on their resume:

  • Name of Institution
  • degree
  • school location
  • Years Attended

If you recently graduated college, your education section tops out your work experience and includes more details. The skills developed in school are real skills that have value in the professional world. Recent grads may include relevant coursework, society, organizations, and extracurriculars that strengthen their candidacy.

Awards, Accolades, & Certifications

All three of the above can be embedded in the work experience and skills sections of your resume. However, if you choose to expose them, they may warrant a class of their own. Either way, relevant certifications, and honors will boost your credibility.

6. Tailor your resume and optimize for applicant tracking systems

It’s all too easy to turn down your resume for dozens of jobs these days, but if you’ve tried this method, you may be disappointed with your success rate. That’s because you didn’t take the time to customize your resume for each individual role—and recruiters can tell.

The most effective thing you can do to improve your chances of getting an interview is to prepare your resume for each job. Customized resumes that align with job requirements and include keywords from the job description will stand out to recruiters who often receive hundreds of resumes for each role.

When you prepare your resume for the job, you are also optimizing for applicant tracking systems, as many ATSs allow recruiters to filter and search by keyword. Want to see if your resume is well prepared? Use Jobscan to view your match score and find missing keywords.

7. Polish up your grammar and formatting

Resume writing is a unique style. It can be difficult to remember which tenses to use or when (and why) to omit pronouns. How can you use language to tell a more compelling story? Which fonts and formats are ATS compatible with? let’s take a look.

Resume Fonts

It is important to use a font that is easy to read, ATS-compatible, and commonly available on the screen. Some traditional resume fonts to consider include Helvetica, Garamond, or Georgia. Unless you’re a designer, avoid using script fonts or custom fonts. Do not use a font size below 10.

Tenses And Pronouns

Use the past tense when talking about actions in the past, and use the present tense when describing an action you are doing in the present tense. Traditional resume writing eschews the personal pronoun (I) and takes the right to the action. the former. “Ledged a new email marketing initiative that increased revenue by 10 percent.”

Resume Action Words

Action verbs help bring your writing to life, making your resume more readable to recruiters and hiring managers. Consider starting each bullet point on your resume with an action verb and replacing common verbs like “manage” or “lead” with more engaging words like “advise” or “quick.”
