शंभाजी राजांचा जन्म याच वर्षी १४ मे रोजी झाला. 1657 मध्ये पुरंदर किल्ल्यावर जन्म. शिवाजी महाराजांसारख्या युगनिर्मात्याचे पुत्र असल्याने लहानपणापासूनच त्यांना रणांगण आणि राजकीय डावपेच यांची ओळख होती. शंभाजी राजांची आई राजे सईबाई यांचे बालपणीच निधन झाले. त्यानंतर पुण्याजवळील कापूरहोळ गावातील धारळ नावाची महिला दूध घेऊन इजिजाबाईकडे गेली. सुरुवातीला त्यांची सावत्र आई सोयराबाईही त्यांच्या प्रेमात पडली. अनेक ऐतिहासिक नोंदींनुसार शंभाजी राजे अतिशय सुंदर आणि शूर होते. राजकारणातील बारकावे त्यांनी आत्मसात केले आहेत. लहान वयातच मंगोल दरबारातील घडामोडी आणि राजकारण जाणून घेणे त्यांना भविष्यात उपयोगी पडेल असा विश्वास ठेवून शिवाजी महाराज त्यांच्यासोबत आग्रा यात्रेला निघाले. तोपर्यंत शंबाजी राजे ९ वर्षांचे होते. शिवाजी महाराज आग्रा तुरुंगातून निसटल्यानंतर, शंभाजी राजांना स्वराज्यात जाणे सहन झाले नाही आणि त्यांना काही काळ सुरक्षित ठिकाणी ठेवावे लागले. शंभाजी राजांच्या पाठीमागे ससेमिरा रोखण्याच्या उद्देशाने शिवाजी महाराजांनी मंगोल सैनिकांनी शंभाजी राजाच्या मृत्यूची अफवा पसरवली. स्वराज्यात गेल्यावर काही वेळातच शंबाजी राजे सुखरूप स्वराज्यात पोहोचले.
