The DMK government in Tamil Nadu presented its first budget since coming to power, months after the opposition AIADMK boycotted the fiscal exercise in the April 6 assembly elections.

Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan’s maiden budget follows the recently released white paper on state finances. “The revised budget will lay a strong foundation for the full budget for the next year,” the finance minister said.

• 100 wetlands will be identified for ecosystem restoration at a cost of Rs 100 crore over the next five years.
• GPS will be used to protect water bodies and wetlands.
• Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 will be completed by 2025. Extension work will be planned from Meenambakkam to Kilambakkam. A detailed project report will be prepared for the Madurai Metro Rail. There will be a discussion with the Center on the expansion of Coimbatore Metro Rail.

• The Namakku name scheme was revived with an allocation of ₹100 crores.
• This year 10 new arts and science colleges will be opened.
