Yertle the Turtle

Dear readers, here we are providing Yertle the Turtle PDF to all of you. Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories PDF is a very popular picture book that was originally published on 12 April 1958. Yertle the Turtle is liked by 87% of Google users. The full name of Dr Seuss is Theodor Seuss Geisel.

As the first in a collection of three stories from the book, Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, “Yertle the Turtle” is rarely read or studied in classrooms, yet it offers an important moral lesson about freedom and independence. Yertle the turtle is the ambitious king of the pond who decides he wants to expand his kingdom.

Yertle orders the turtles to stand on each other’s backs to form a tall throne, ignoring the complaints of the turtles at the bottom. He then sits atop this throne and proclaims that he rules over all that he sees.

Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories PDF / Structure and Poetic Techniques in Yertle the Turtle

‘Yertle the Turtle’ by Dr Seuss is a fifteen-stanza short story/poem. It makes use of a consistent rhyme scheme of AABBCCDD, and so on, changing end sounds from couplet to couplet. Throughout, Seuss also uses the metrical pattern of anapaestic tetrameter.

Seuss also uses several different poetic techniques. These include but are not limited to alliteration, enjambment, and anthropomorphism. The first of these, alliteration, occurs when words are used in succession, or at least appear close together, and begin with the same sound. For example, “water” and “warm” are in line four of the first stanza, and “Plunk” and “pond” are in stanza fourteen.

Anthropomorphism is used to make inanimate objects, forces and animals act like real human beings, not just seem to be. This is been through the characteristically human approach to power that Yertle takes and his eventual defeat at his own hand.

Another important technique commonly used in poetry is enjambment. It occurs when a line is cut off before its natural stopping point. Enjambment forces a reader down to the next line, and the next, quickly. One has to move forward in order to comfortably resolve a phrase or sentence. For instance, the transitions between lines one and two of stanza three and lines one and two of stanza five.

Yertle the Turtle Summary PDF

  • Yertle the Turtle is greedy and self-serving. He thinks that he will increase his power by positioning himself literally above his kingdom. He needs to be physically perched above the others to show them that he is in charge. This reveals Yertle’s insecurity about how others view him.
  • Yertle’s need for affirmation is more important than the comfort of the turtles. He ignores Mack’s complaints of pain and hunger. Theodor Seuss Geisel uses Yertle the Turtle to teach a moral lesson to readers which makes it an allegory. He is the antagonist or villain of this story because his actions put the citizens at risk.
  • Mack evolves into the hero figure when he advocates for the well-being of the turtles who are suffering. All it takes is a burp to topple Yertle the Turtle’s reign. The impact of one turtle’s action shows the power of each individual no matter the position. Yertle the Turtle falls quickly from his perch of perceived control.
  • He let his greed control his actions when he decided that he wasn’t happy with what he had. As a result Yertle the Turtle is left to rule only a muddy pond. Geisel’s use of words introduces young readers to literary devices. Geisel uses situational irony which is the unexpected outcome of an event.
  • Mack’s burp is what saves the turtles from oppression instead of a bold confrontation or battle. Juxtaposition is a technique that places two different scenes alongside each other for effect. Geisel juxtaposes Yertle the Turtle’s vast kingdom with his muddy pond domain to show the effects of unchecked greed. Literary devices combine with a rich story to entertain and teach a lesson about greed to the developing readers.
